The Alta River is a cornerstone of life and activity here in Alta. A plentiful supply of big salmon run up the river each year, but there is more than just salmon (and the fly fishermen who chase them) to see here! The river abounds with other types of fish, birds including hawks and eagles sometimes soar overhead, and the river itself provides spectacular scenery along its entire length.

For centuries, locals have used sharp-nosed, narrow longboats to navigate the rapids and currents on the river. These sturdy wooden craft are still used today, and that's what you'll ride in on this tour.

Your tour begins at Sorrisniva (the same place where you'll find the world-renowned Igloo Hotel each winter). From there, you'll don a lifejacket and step into the longboat. Your experienced river guide will take command and steer you southwards along the Alta River, pointing out sights along the way and telling you stories from the river. This shorter version of the tour travels about halfway to the canyon to Patagoski, the first big rapids in the river, before returning to Sorrisniva where you will be served coffee/tea and homemade cake.

The tour includes the guided boat ride and safety equipment. Transport to and from Sorrisniva is not included in the price. The water level in the Alta River does rise and fall, and there are times when tours may not operate if the water level is too low to safely operate.
