Alta… The City of the Northern Lights – The Land of the Midnight Sun

Northern Lights in the winter, midnight sun in the summer. Year-round hiking and biking, dog sledding, and snowmobiling when the snow arrives, riverboat trips, and canoeing in the summer. Alta is the perfect playground… one you can explore in peace and quiet!

Located far north at the innermost part of the Altafjord, Alta may be far above the Arctic Circle, but it’s easy to reach, whether by a 2-hour flight or by road. Despite its northern latitude, Alta enjoys a relatively mild climate with stable summers and cold winters, usually snow-covered from November to April/May.

With 24-hour daylight from May to the end of August (midnight sun from late May to late July), you’ll have perfect conditions to explore the area at any time of day.

When do the locals sleep? In winter…

OkOkay, that was a joke. But for many, summer is definitely a time when it’s easier to stay awake longer and sleep less. During your stay, you’ll find your own natural rhythm—everyone reacts differently to the endless light.

While activities are great during the day, if you’re awake, nighttime is a perfect time to be outside and explore nature.

Discover Alta Canyon on a guided tour, whether on foot, by bike, or with a guide in your own car. Paddle a canoe or take a riverboat along the Alta River to see this fantastic landscape from the water. Whether on a mountain bike or on foot, exploring the local area is a great way to connect with nature. You’ll also find unique museums, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and opportunities to experience Sámi culture at a relaxed pace.

Winter is our peak season, offering a wide range of activities. Many visitors come for the Northern Lights, and we have better viewing conditions than many places north, south, east, or west of us. For more adventure, there are snowmobile tours, while dog sledding offers a quieter way to experience nature. Or, explore on snowshoes or skis, immersing yourself in the tranquility of the wilderness.

Alta offers several hotels in the city center, providing a perfect base for exploring in all directions. You’ll also find camping cabins, apartments, and smaller hotels. Unique accommodations include heated domes and tents, either in the forest or at a husky farm, and a large ice hotel that’s rebuilt every winter.

And just a couple of hours from Alta, even more unique and fascinating accommodation options await. Handcrafted tree cabins, seaside cottages far from civilization, high-standard lodges near a ski resort, and more!

One thing you’ll notice about the nature and activities in Alta is the cozy small-town feel. No large crowds—just you and a few others exploring at your own pace.
