Winter Tour of Alta

Alta is a small town, but there are still hidden interesting gems scattered throughout the area. This tour will take you to some of those places, and your own, dedicated guide will help make it a genuinely personal experience for you.

One of our guides from Boreal Adventure will meet you in Alta and take you to the edge of town where the Alta Museum sits along the edge of Alta Fjord, surrounded by ancient rock carvings. The carvings, dating from between 6,000 and 2,000 years ago, show fascinating, fleeting glimpses into the lives of people who lived here after the end of the last ice age. Though the outdoor carvings are covered with snow in the winter, the museum itself has a good sample of carvings and photos of the carvings (including many that are off-limits to the public all year). The rest of the museum has exhibits on local cultural themes, plus a souvenir shop with high quality local products and a coffee shop that serves fresh waffles. Your guide is available to take you through the exhibits or let you explore on your own, or just sit and chat with you about life in Alta and Norway. The museum’s coffee shop has one of the best views of Alta Fjord, so it’s the perfect place to have a relaxing conversation.

Your next stop will be the Northern Lights Cathedral in city center, where your guide will tell you about the history, construction and symbolism of the town’s newest landmark. You’ll see both outside and inside of this unique structure, and then head downstairs to a movie with northern lights form Alta. As part of the tour, your guide will take you around on a short driving tour of Alta, where you can see the historic slate dock and the old Alta Church, the only building in Alta still standing after World War II. You’ll be able to stop for pictures along the way.

Private Tour to the North Cape – Winter

North Cape, celebrated as the northernmost point of Europe’s land, is a very popular destination for travelers from around the world. But it’s not the easiest place to get to, especially for people who are planning activities in Alta, Tromsø¸or other cities in the north. This tour provides you with a luxurious alternative to taking public transit buses in order to reach this remote destination. More convenient, and much more fun!

You’ll start from Alta in the morning with your own guide. You’ll travel through the forested valleys around Alta, and then up and onto the rough and rugged Finnmarksvidda high plateau. The journey will take you through the windswept, snowy wilderness to the coast, and along the way your guide can slow down or stop for an occasional picture. And of course, our guides are full of stories and information to make the long journey go quickly by.

Once at North Cape, you’ll receive a certificate to commemorate your journey, stamped with North Cape’s exclusive seal, and a glass of sparkling wine to celebrate. There will be plenty of time to explore the visitor center there and wander out to the big iron globe. Look around and look out to the open ocean… it really does feel like the start or end of the whole world! You can eat lunch at either a coffee shop or in the Kompassen restaurant while you are at North Cape. When your visit is complete, your guide will bring you safely back to Alta again.

Sami Experience in Maze (private tour)

This is a special version of a tour that is normally only available for large groups. You’ll take a private tour to learn about and experience old Sami traditions, just you and your host. The tour starts in Alta. You will be picked up by a guide and drive out with your car to the Sami town of Maze. Along the way, you’ll have a one-on-one guided tour with one of our best guides who can tell you about life in Alta and Norway, the history of the area, and details about the history and future of the Sami people.

When you arrive in Maze, you will be greeted by a member of a local reindeer-herding family, clothed in a traditional winter outfit. After introductions are complete, you’ll meet a few frisky reindeer, and try out a brief but exciting (and occasionally unpredictable) reindeer sled ride at the compound. Your host and guide will help you start the sled, but after that it’s up to you to hang on and have fun!

After the fun reindeer ride, you are ushered into a large lavvo, a traditional Sami tent that features a fire in the center. Over coffee and delicious dried reindeer meat snacks (or lunch if you prefer), you’ll spend the rest of your two-hour stay talking with your host about the old days and old ways of the Sami. You’ll even hear joiking, the chantlike song of the Sami, and get a chance to try it yourself in a fun way.

With the visit complete, you’ll say goodbye to the world of the Sami and return to Alta. If there’s time remaining, we will extend the tour to show you a few extra sights around town.

Duration is approx. 4,5 hours and includes two hours at the Sami camp in Maze, and 2.5 hours of private guiding and driving, along with transport, and snacks/lunch at the Sami camp. The tour is guaranteed to be exclusive, so only your guided group will be at the Sami camp during the tour. (Group size 2-8 people)

In Search of the Northern Lights

This tour is all about exploring the Northern Lights and you’ll spend the time finding the best location for aurora viewing. We will start the evening with an informative brief, where we’ll give you an understanding of the phenomenon and what we can expect on today’s tour.

We can’t tell you beforehand where this tour takes you other than that we will follow the weather forecast and drive away from the city to a location where there’s total darkness. We search for the Northern Lights by heading to secluded areas only accessible by car and local knowledge. If the sky is clear, you might be lucky enough to see a spectacular Northern Light blaze on the night sky.

Changes can be made regarding weather conditions. We use safe and comfortable vans with 4WD and winter tires with spikes. We cannot guarantee to see the northern lights. Warm thermal suite can be borrowed.
