Join us on a fascinating journey in and around Alta, the city of the Northern Lights. Together, we will shed light on the historical significance of this unique natural spectacle, take a look behind the scenes and then set off in search of the Nordic souls dancing in the sky.

Start your arctic adventure with an interesting introduction to northern lights in Alta’s most iconic building; the Northern Light Cathedral. Visit the town’s new parish church, which combines ancient Christian values with the rich Nordic nature in its unique modern design, both inside and out.You will then travel back in time to understand the importance that Aurora Borealis played in and around Alta for centuries. Take a peek behind the mesmerizing, colorful curtains and immerse yourself in the fascinating physics behind one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena. Discover why Alta is still one of the best places in the world to observe the dancing lights.Finally, together with your experienced guide, you will search for the indigenous spirits that dance across the sky on many nights. Far away from distracting artificial light sources, we keep an eye out for Lady Aurora, who has been inspiring awe and wonder in people for thousands of years, while we let the clear, cold polar air flow through our lungs.

Northern lights Safari by Snowmobile

Join us on a hunt for the Northern Lights! Experience the Finnmarksvidda plateau — Europe’s largest mountain plateau — by snowmobile

We are local guides who know the area well. The tour is adapted to the weather conditions to give you the best chance to see the Northern Lights. We offer private tours or small group tours for 2–4 people. With us, you can expect high quality and safe transport. During the trip, you’ll learn about the Northern Lights and the local history of Alta. Hot drinks and light snacks are served along the way. This tour requires warm clothing and safety equipment. If you don’t have your own, you can borrow from us. If you have children who cannot ride on the snowmobile, we also have a sled available with space for two passengers. Although we cannot guarantee that you will see the Northern Lights, we will do our best to make it a great experience and a memorable adventure from Alta.

Northern lights Chase by Car

Join us on an exciting hunt for the Northern Lights! We are local guides who know the area well, and we adapt each trip according to the weather conditions to give you the best possible chance to experience the Aurora Borealis.

We offer private tours or small-group tours for 2–8 people. With us, you can expect high-quality service and safe transport. During the trip, you’ll learn about the Northern Lights and the local history of Alta. Hot drinks and light snacks are served during the tour. It is also possible to borrow a warm thermal suit if needed. Although we cannot guarantee that you will see the Northern Lights, we will do our best to make it a wonderful experience and a lasting memory from Alta.

Northern Lights by Snowmobile

Experience the magical winter landscape and the spectacular fun of snowmobiling. If you are lucky the Northern Lights will be dancing above, you during the evening.

Join an unforgettable snowmobile safari above the Arctic Circle and experience true arctic wilderness and remoteness on Finnmarksvidda, Europe’s largest mountain plateau. Upon arrival at Gargia Lodge we will start the evening with an informative brief, where we’ll give you an understanding of the phenomenon and what we can expect on today’s excursion.

The tour will take you through a snow-covered forest all the way up to the Beskades Mountain range, the beginning of Finnmarksvidda. If we are lucky, we will get to see the magnificent northern lights dancing across the sky on our trip or be treated with a beautiful arctic night sky. Even though this tour is not focused on hunting the Northern Lights, being outside on a dark winter evening might give a wonderful opportunity to witness the lights while going out on this adventure

Northern light base camp

The Northern Lights are one of the most impressive natural phenomena Norway has to offer. On our trip we hope to see some. We set up our camp away from the crowded villages to have a clear view of the sky. Our guide has some exciting stories and facts about the Aurora Borealis which he will be happy to share with you.

About the tour:
The tours are highly weather dependent, therefore our guide decides which region of Vesterålen he/she would like to travel, where he/she sees the best chances of aurora sighting. Driving distances up to 1 hr for the outward and also for the return journey can occur. If we see the northern lights first on the way back, we can extend the tour by one hour without extra costs (except for the bus).

Aurora Outpost Nyksund

For many travelers, visiting Northern Norway in winter has one ultimate goal: witnessing the Northern Lights. The Vesterålen region offers numerous excellent viewing spots, eliminating the need for long, exhausting drives. Our exclusive Northern Lights safari provides a truly immersive experience.

Guests are picked up directly from their hotels and transported comfortably by bus to Nyksund, a historic fishing village renowned for its stunning coastal landscape and dark, unpolluted skies – perfect for Northern Lights observation.

Chasing the Northern Lights: During the one-hour drive to Nyksund, we remain flexible if the Aurora appears en route, we stop to enjoy the spectacle.

Warm Welcome: Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a special Northern Lights welcome drink, followed by a short introduction to our expert guides.

Night Walk Through Nyksund: Equipped with headlamps and spikes (if needed), we explore Nyksund’s rich history and its transformation from an abandoned village to a vibrant cultural hub.

Northern Lights Buffet: A delicious dinner made from locally sourced ingredients
offers an authentic taste of the Arctic.

Aurora Presentation: A fascinating presentation delves into the science and legends of the Northern Lights, blending facts with local stories and personal experiences. If the Northern Lights appear during the talk, we pause the session to step outside and admire the show.

Relax & Enjoy: After the presentation, guests have time to ask questions, share experiences, and enjoy the cozy atmosphere before the return journey.

Bodø: Aurora Sky Camps

Embark on a quest to see the northern lights in the Arctic. For our Northern Lights Chase we choose from 2 private camps, each located in a different area with distinct weather patterns, to provide you with the best opportunities to experience the northern lights.

Enjoy a warm meal and hot drinks at the camp. Listen to local stories about star constellations overhead while you wait for the northern lights to appear.

If the northern lights appear, we make a short stop along the way to take in the natural phenomenon.

With private camps we make sure not spending the whole tour on or besides public road, waiting for the Lights to appear. We wait in a comfortable camp with toilet facilities, a local host and a warm meal.

With private camps and local hosts, we also support the local community.

Sami & Reindeer under the Northern Lights

The Sami continue their traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle based around their very own reindeer herds. At Sorrisniva we work closely with local Sami families to give guests authentic experiences with an understanding of the Sami culture and lifestyle.

This unique and intriguing experience takes you through the breathtaking scenery surrounding Sorrisniva. You will ride on a sled pulled by reindeer for 2,5 – 3 km looking for the northern lights. An exciting and quiet nature experience in the Arctic winter darkness in the evening. Along the way they will tell you stories from the Sami culture and legends about the Northern Lights.

Our recommendation:

Combine this tour a visit of the Igloo Hotel and with a delicious dinner at one of Sorrisniva`s restaurants. Mus be booked in advance.

Chase the Northern Lights: Heated Boat Cruise

Join us on a magical Northern Lights safari in the unique environment of Finnmark. Our boats provide a comfortable and safe ride, perfect for admiring the night sky of the Altafjord and the Northern Lights. The tour starts from our central location in Alta harbor, where our experienced guides will welcome you.

On board you’ll find comfortable, heated indoor observation areas, as well as an open deck for those who want to see the Northern Lights directly under starry skies between the mountains on the “dark” sea. While admiring the spectacular views of the fjord, our guides will share fascinating information about the science and local cultural history of the Northern Lights, as well as point out the best places to experience the light show.

Although we cannot guarantee the sighting of the Northern Lights, the Altafjord is one of the best places in the world to observe this phenomenon. Regardless of the aurora activity, the tour will provide spectacular views of the Arctic landscape and offer unique opportunities to experience the diversity of wildlife in the area.
