A 3-hour guided tour in the Altafjord. Ever since the last ice age people have been living in the Altafjord and the cultural heritage are many and diverse. A meeting ground for many different cultures has sett its mark on the land. Combined with the arctic wildlife, and especially the whales, we have a unique tour about living in the arctic.

This time of year, large shoal of herring enters the fjord and with them a large numbers of whales. Mink whale and orcas are the most common. By car we are able to cover the whole westside of the fjord and hopefully see the whales for solid ground. This tour is perfect for those who want to see whales but don’t want to be in a boat.

Join finnmark moods on a whale watching tour in the Altafjord, operated by a local company based in Alta. The tour starts from our central meeting point in Alta harbour, where you will be welcomed by our experienced guides.

On board Sea Runner, you can enjoy a warm indoor area with seating and a toilet, as well as tea, coffee and cookies during the tour. There is also space on deck for those who prefer to watch the whales and the surrounding nature outdoors. Our guides share insights about the fjord, local life and wildlife while keeping an eye out for whales and other marine animals.

The tour takes place during the main whale season from October to January, when migrating herring attracts orcas and humpback whales to the fjord. Together with our captain, we search for these animals in their natural environment.

Whale sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the Altafjord offers rich marine life and beautiful scenery. With a limited number of guests on board, the tour has a calm and comfortable atmosphere.

In winter, whales come to the herring-rich fjords in northern Norway to hunt. This is a unique opportunity to experience the whales up close while exploring the beautiful Fjords of northern Norway. You will get to enjoy the beautiful winter skies, while surrounded by mountains and the fjords wildlife.

We adjust the start point of this trip to where the whales have last been seen to maximize your chance of seeing them. This can mean that we first have to drive for up to 1 hour to get to our harbor. Once on the boat we will make our way out into the fjords to look for humpback whales and Orcas. We will keep a safe distance and turn off our boat engines to minimize the disturbance to the whales. The whales are just as curious about visitors as we are about them, so they will most likely come and swim around our boat.

Changes can be made regarding weather and light conditions. Wear warm clothes and shoes according to the season and arctic climate. Please note that while we try our best, we can not guarantee that we will actually see whales on the trip. The season start and end date can be adjusted according to whale migration patterns. Recently, whales have been appearing in Alta Fjord. They have migrated further north, giving us the opportunity to observe them in our area. The two most common species in Alta Fjord are sperm whales and orcas, but there are also good chances of seeing porpoises and hourglass dolphins.
