Alta's small city center holds some hidden gems and stories. Come out on a walk, see the town's highlights and hear stories of Alta's past and present.

You will travel by shuttle bus from your cruise ship to the old Alta Church just outside of city center to begin the walk. The church, built in the 1860s, is the oldest building in Alta and is part of one of Alta's most important stories from World War 2. After time to see around and inside the church, you will walk with your guide through a nearby neighborhood and get an idea of day-to-day life in this arctic town. Then it's back to city center and time for more stories of Alta's older and more recent past, from the slate industry of the 1800s to tragedy in the 2000s.

The walk will bring you to the new centerpiece of Alta: the Northern Lights Cathedral. Your guide will tell you all about the building, from the outside construction to the symbolism of the artwork inside. The conclusion of the tour will be a visit to BorealisAlta, a new interactive exhibit about the northern lights in the basement of the church. The exhibition is packed with information about the science and mythology of the aurora. At the end of the tour, you will have the choice to stay in town and explore on your own, or to return by shuttle bus to the boat.

This tour requires approximately 1,5 kilometers of walking from start to finish. Please note that if religious services (funerals or weddings, for example) are taking place inside either church, then tours inside that church will not be possible.
