Alta quartzite slate: One of the best if not the best high quality slates of the world! 7-800 million year old sediments compressed under kilometres of bedrock came up to the surface 250 million years ago here in Alta. Exploiting the slate has been an industry in Alta since the early 1860’s and is exported all over the world. Generations of hard working men have supported their families by taking out slate from the mountains south of Alta, and at Pæskatun now the 3rd and 4th generation are doing this hard labour. A slateworker of today has a warm, modern hall and different equipment to ease the work, but his skills and a steady, strong hand are still required.

At Pæskatun guests will be met by an experienced slate worker who will give an interesting explanation of how the slate is taken out of the mountain and how it ends up as the best tile one can have on a roof!

Pæskatun have some old slate cottages onsite in which the slate workers lived and worked in the old times. As the site is high up in the mountains we can also offer a fantastic view over the valley and the mountains surrounding us. Some of the slate at Pæskatun goes into the production of souvenirs, and these locally-made souvenirs can be purchased at site.

Minimum walking distance on the tour is approximately 50 meters.
